The Cleveland Trip

Posted on Sunday 25 August 2002

Just got back from Cleveland, where we enjoyed the hospitality of Sheila’s folks. Lots of homemade Indian food was consumed.

We got in around 11 on Fri night and had dinner and went to bed. The next day, we had lunch in Coventry, a hip walking district area. It was at a restaurant called Tommy’s. The food was vaguely hippy and they spell “hummos” as “homos” which was different. I had a meat pie with falafel and cheese inside. I also had birch beer to drink, and little bits of Rick and Sheila’s yogurt milkshake (I’m being careful because I might have mono, I mean, I don’t know how I’d be able to tell since I’m so nap dependent all the time anyway).

So, anyway, afterwards, we went to the Rock Hall of Fame, Cleveland’s pyramidic monument to music. It was much cooler than I expected. For example, who knew that Jimi Hendrix could draw (one of them looks like Mutt and Jeff)? Or that John Lennon got only satisfactory marks in English (they have his report cards saved upstairs)? Or, that Billy Joel originally titled “We Didn’t Start the Fire” “Jolene” and there used to be a different chorus?

There was also an MTV exhibit that employed 20 some TV’s in a cylinder and displayed a tribute video that you’d have to be part of the MTV generation to understand, much less appreciate. We stared like zombies at it for a while, waiting for it to loop.

Quote of the day from the Rock Hall, a little boy to his father, upon watching the intro documentary on the roots of rock ‘n roll: “That sucked. They didn’t have any good bands.”

We went back for dinner (Pakistani chicken and Sheila’s mom’s special bread) and then we went bowling. I was terrible (as usual), but I managed to beat Rick by 2. Sheila won, beating Jory by 2. Second game, I got a little higher, Sheila and Jory did OK, but Rick doubled my score with a whopping 166. The highlight of bowling were the little animations for getting a spare or a strike. These were a little 3d rendered bowling pin guy doing something or another.

Back to Sheila’s house, sleep, a trip to Sherwin Williams for them (I slept in) and then lunch and home.

Good stuff, all around.
