Movie: Spirited Away

Posted on Wednesday 2 October 2002

I finally got to catch Spirited Away this past Friday. This movie was just what I needed to get me out of my blah work weeks and put me into another world, one so fully realized with tiny amazing details that I could watch it again right now, just to see what I missed the first time.

I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will compare it to Princess Mononoke… I preferred Spirited Away because it was a world that touched ours, in a place where reality is thin. I thought the characters were all great, especially side ones like the three bouncing heads and the jumping lamp post. In the end, those are the things that make me remember this movie when I look at everyday objects. And that’s pretty special.

What really makes this movie excellent was its subtlety. There was no preachy moral. Just a young girl finding strength in herself to do the right thing, but in the end, she’s able to go back and be a little girl again, safe with her parents. The love story part is probably the weakest link.

So, there’s my review, and I guess it’s more of an impression, but that’s why I named this section the name I named it…

See Spirited Away!
