A week’s worth

Posted on Saturday 18 January 2003

Hey there, sorry I’ve been absent. In honor of this being entry 100 and all, I’ll try to sum up the week. Feel free to skim, this is gonna be long. Here’s a table of contents, even:

Milwaukee trip
Job training
Sorority improv
Janeane Garofalo
Improv with Indianans

Milwaukee trip:

My brother, sister in law, and I went up to Milwaukee last weekend to celebrate Dad’s birthday. They don’t drive with music, so I sorta passed out on the way up. Woke up as we were pulling into the parking lot of my sister’s place next to my dad’s car and as I was wearily pushing open the door, the wind kicked up and bashed the door into Dad’s Jaguar. Aagh! There was paint transferred and a tiny chip and we walked up to the condo with me feeling like shit.

But Dad was OK with it. They gave me a hard time during lunch. Played with babies… Dinner was prime rib cooked with by my parents and it was excellent. Just talking about it now makes me want to get a steak.

Job training:

I just finished the first week of job training for ZS. I wasn’t really sure what to expect out of it. It started with food (always good) and nametags (I hate nametags). Binders. Handouts.

Here’s my thing. My job is to be a code monkey. That’s what I want to be. Learning all the business side seems to be the way to get ahead in the company but man, I’m having a hard time staying awake in a couple sessions. The latter part of the week was much better, so perhaps I’m just building up more tolerance to the whole being a business person thing. The section on communication was totally new to me and now I can see how Kuwie learned how to talk. The difference: I won’t have to do it in daily work. I’ll get to just be a code monkey. Yay.

Sorority improv:

Tuesday my team did a show for Pi Phi’s bid night. How I hate the Greek system. Wait, what was the point of this? Oh, right, the show. It was only so so, probably due to the terrible stage setup and lack of attention from the audience.

Janeane Garofalo:

Hey funny lady. She came to Pick Staiger on Thursday. The opening act was Zach Galifianakis who was in Out Cold. He just plinked away at a piano and told jokes. He was OK. Ms. Garofalo was awesome. Talked about the situation in Iraq, her problems with moderation, and delicate medical problems. Her stuff on Iraq (no to war) was pretty well supported by the students in the audience (and I thought they were apathetic hawks) and she really impressed me with her intelligence. Not as much as Ben Stein, but hey, he’s got the resume for political commentary.

Improv with Indianans:

Indiana’s Full Frontal Comedy came to campus yesterday for a show at Willard. We threw the whole shebang together really spur of the moment and my team had a great show. Probably their best show this year. The Indiana team is smaller and they’re just learning the Harold really, and they did OK. I was feeling bad for them that we couldn’t get a better space but really the Willard audience was larger than a lot of the ones we got last year.

We partied afterwards at Jessie’s apartment but I left early ‘cause I am starting to realize that I’m getting too old for this.

I told El that depending on what time of day you ask me, I could be either persuaded to give up my team at the drop of a hat or ready to coach them for another two years.

So, a busy week, but the one to come should be easier.
