Movie: Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

Posted on Monday 3 February 2003

We went to see Confessions of a Dangerous Mind on Saturday night. Big group of apartment people and friends, so we couldn’t all sit in the stadium seats. El and Jenny and her friend Landon and I went to the second row, aka crane-your-neck area. At the beginning I made a few cracks like, “So… big…” but in the end I adjusted (aren’t humans grand) and stopped whining about it.

I liked the movie a lot. One reviewer called it “visually interesting” but I would go farther than that. Maybe it was being pressed up into the movie’s face for 2 hours, but I was totally engrossed with the camera angles and color choices.

(warning: possible spoilers in the “Read More” section)

As for the subject material, I don’t think that Chuck Barris was any sort of CIA contract killer. I think those guys just don’t talk. That’s just me. Also since Penny is a made up character (based on Barris’ bio on IMDB) that just makes me think everything else is false too.

What else… way too many shots of Sam Rockwell’s derriere.

I loved the line he says to the two guys while leaving the killer training camp: “Bye Jack, bye Lee.” I was chortling in the theater, but few others were. I felt like my sister (who always continues laughing way after the joke is done, and that sets off more of her laughter).

Julia Roberts was OK, but I didn’t like her last scene. El said it was totally Princess Bride. I would have preferred

George Clooney is cool. Mega cool. Maybe I’ll rent Ocean’s 11 now…

Yeah, its pretty much a fantasy story. The CIA isn’t really that cute. I was actually reading an article at http://www.thesimon.com/article_of_week/ that talks about the movie in light of the cold war and today’s near war state of affairs. you should read it.
