Blackout

Posted on Monday 30 June 2003

So last night at 3 AM I was jarred awake by a beeping from the floor. I went over to my cellphone and opened it. The beeping continued. Tried it again. No, the cellphone was fine. My alarm makes a different noise so I knew it wasn’t that.

I have these dreams all the time about things beeping that I can’t turn off. It’s usually my computer, or a phone. And in real life, it’s the alarm, coming to wake me up. So I thought I was in some sort of hyper real lucid dream. Before I tested out my flying powers, I gave reality one more try.

The beeping was my UPS, warning that there was no power. I reset the UPS and set my cellphone alarm (yay battery power). Then I was a really nice guy and I went to wake up Kuwie to tell him to set his cellphone alarm.

We tried to reset the circuit breaker, but no go.

It finally came back on in the morning.

I wonder what I can spend my karma on. :-)

You were lucky. Power is serious business, so serious that at the height of the energy speculation bubble the head of Enron and Dynegy were MAKING MONEY HAND OVER FIST DESPITE HAVING NO PHYSICAL ASSETS. Believe me, I know; I work in power. Every day people walk up to me and say the same thing: “You work in the prison? No, that place is a prison. There’s barbed wire and everything. You’re sure it’s not a prison?” As my old boss said before leaving the company for more money, power is hell. And you don’t want to get any on you.
