Games: EyeToy

Posted on Monday 8 December 2003

I got an EyeToy yesterday. For those of you who don’t know, it’s Sony’s new USB camera for the PS2. It sits on top of your TV and you use it to play EyeToy games. These games involve using your body for something, be it washing windows, slapping ninjas, etc.

When I first heard about it, I wasn’t too impressed. But then one day about a month and a half ago, Adam and I stopped by EB on our way home from work and we played with it for 15 minutes. And even though it was set up horribly, it still worked pretty darn well. I had a gift certificate to the store so I figured it’d be a fun novelty.

Got it, plugged it in, and whoa. This thing is fun. It’s not so much what’s going on onscreen (although all the minigames are very cute). It’s watching Todd do the chicken dance to slaughter ninjas and break boards. It’s watching Adam jump up and down from left to right to clean windows that makes this thing amazing.

Now, I’m not sure if there will ever be more EyeToy games (there’s one out in the UK, where EyeToy first launched). But the possibilities! A lightsaber game! That mocap lightgun game from the arcades (although how many people have both EyeToys AND lightguns?)! Etc.

We played for a couple hours last night and I’m almost embarrassed to say, I’m sore as hell today. I’m serious. The boxing game wrecked me. Utterly. Ow. Pain.

I don’t seem to be getting a lot of sympathy from anyone I tell this to, however. It does hurt. But then I think of the chicken dance. And I smile.

Hrm. Sony’s plans for world domination seem to be ahead of my own. I guess it’s time to bump up that whole soporifics-in-the-canned-peaches plot.
