So El and I went to go see Sideways tonight. It’s the new Alexander Payne movie. It was much less hateful than his other stuff, I felt.
Paul Giamatti was kick ass. I love the fact that this guy is a star, that he can solidly anchor a movie. That makes me happy. The movie itself was well done. I didn’t think it dragged until a bit at the end.
In the beginning of the movie, things were fine, and then the frame got bumped up 3 feet or so. So for a lot of the movie, people’s heads were cut off. At first I thought things were wrong. Then I wondered if maybe the movie was supposed to be like that: focusing on people’s mouths and wineglasses. Then it got corrected and I felt dumb for thinking that.
All the wine talk in the movie was actually pretty interesting, but what hooked me was the characters and how real they felt. The relationship between Miles and Jack really reminded me of how Jason and I interact. Really, the movie made me want to take a road trip with him.
Final note: Virginia Madsen is in the movie! She was the love interest in Electric Dreams, which really shaped my view of the world as a child. So… yeah.
