My brother and I left Chicago yesterday for Macworld SF. It’s my first Macworld and I’m pretty excited to see one. This year’s Keynote is supposed to be good (unlike the utterly boring Macworld NY 2001). Also, my brother’s giving a talk on Thursday, so that’s pretty cool.
Anyway, we got to the hotel around 4. The place was packed with people registering for another convention. Drug reps. You can always spot em. It felt weird to be around them… I kinda wanted to ask if it was a district meeting and what they were going to be doing…
Went out to pick up our badges. The lady at the desk we couldn’t go downstairs without a badge, but the other lady told us to go downstairs to get my brother’s badge. Finally we got down. We plotted out some stuff to do during the week and then hit the Metreon to kill some time before the Mac Managers party.
Mac Managers is this mailing list that my brother is on. It’s for people who admin Macs, a question and answer forum. Anyway, they have this party every year at a bar on Beale St. So we headed out for Beale as rain started to fall.
My umbrella is never leaving my person again this trip. I’d left mine at the hotel so my brother graciously shared his as we walked east on Beale… and kept walking. Finally Beale ended and we had to ask a nice lady walking her dog where the hell the bar was. Now it really started pouring and we ran back the way we’d came, finally getting in.
We were early for the party because my brother wanted to hang out with the organizer before anyone else got there. They were supposed to do the talk on Thursday together but then the other guy had other work obligations. We had some of the most satisfying burgers ever (mine had jack and guacamole and the burger was nice and burnt smelling on the outside and perfectly textured inside). I’m looking forward to eating this week.
We were on the upper floor of this bar, which was just under a green awning. The rain pounded the roof and tried to leak in through the supports.
More people showed up and I realized that perhaps the Mac community has a higher poser quotient than other computing groups and that might be why Adam hates us so much. For example: a guy asked the bartender for “a little white vino for the fairer sex.” That’s just unnecessary, man.
We all got door prizes from Monster (a car iPod charger / FM transmitter, score). The main event was the business card drawing for other prizes. Stuff like Photoshop, inDesign. I won a mouse. The guy called my brother’s name first. He went up and everyone in the crowd started yelling “PGP! PGP!” Then the guy realized it was actually my card. So I won, woohoo. I feel a little bad about winning since I’m not part of the list, but hey at least I won a mouse and not something freakin’ expensive.
The rain had mostly stopped, so we walked back to the hotel.
