I’m typing this from bed. Yesterday at work, I had a horrible stomachache. So, I decided to go home sick. I spent the afternoon chugging Pepto Bismol and trying to sleep. My gut hurt so badly and I was running a fever. I was also gasping a lot from the pain, so I started hyperventilating. Couldn’t feel my hands, man! I was worried that it might be appendicitis so I had Adam and Jeanette take me to the ER (my doctor had left for the say by the time I decided that I needed medical attention).
El met us there and we waited and waited to get in. My eyes were glued to the door (El and I were well familiar with ER procedure). Finally, we got in.
The nurse practitioner started an IV (evidently I have crappy veins) and administered some pepcid, to no effect. I had a 102 degree fever, so they also gave me some stuff to take that down. Then I had some x rays. After that, I got an ultrasound to investigate my gallbladder. In between these tests were a lot of waiting and from time to time various doctors would come in and poke me in the belly to see me say “Ouch.”
El was a complete angel, keeping me company, keeping my friends and family informed and keeping my spirits up. I had a couple freakout moments (especially when they thought it was my gallbladder… I really am fond of that thing.). She calmed me down. We played a few rounds of 185 with the various medical objects in the room (185 rubber gloves walk into a bar. The bartender says, “I’m sorry, we don’t serve rubber gloves here.” The gloves say, “That was the wrist we ran coming here.”)
My brother and Jen came around 11 (told you there was lots of waiting). The final test was a CT scan to check my appendix. That was the only rough test for me. First I had to drink 2 cups of this contrast, which tasted like paint thinner. Then, during the actual test, I got injected with iodine through my IV, which burned like a mofo.
The CT showed no signs of appendicitis, meaning that this was probably viral gastroenteritis. My brother made a rubber glove turkey to cheer me up (or to entertain himself… who knows?)
Got discharged around 3:15 or so and came home to collapse.
I’m feeling better today. I spend a lot of time in the bathroom getting rid of the CT contrast (I call it “inking”). My stomach still hurts a bit and I had to take a raincheck on El and my trip to Phoenix for her spring break (we were supposed to leave tomorrow).
We have made a pact though, no more Friday nights in the emergency room.
Wow, what an ordeal! Hope you get plenty of rest and feel better!
oh no!! hope you’re feeling better. stay away from unidentifiable meat in biohazard bags. that’s would be my lunch…
Heh heh heh….rubber glove turkeys…..heh heh heh…
