I read a lot. Right now I'm rereading Waiting, by Ha Jin. However, I find myself totally blowing through it, not really soaking it in. Maybe that's backlash from The Confusion... Or I need to temper my prose reading with more graphic novels...
Anyway, the basis of this strip was a rainy day when my brother and I were playing this speedreading game on the Apple II. I must've been in 4th or 5th grade. The program would flash a sentence on the screen, a basic "<subject> <verb> the <adjective> <object>" and then it would ask you what the subject was, verb, etc.
We got really good at gaming the system and soon the Apple II was clocking us at 5000 wpm...
In sixth grade Study Skills class, our reading speed would be clocked and comprehension graded... I was always really competitive at those tests.
